City of Perry Suspends Recycling Service
The City of Perry is suspending recycling services beginning May 1st, 2024.
You will continue to receive your regularly scheduled household garbage, yard debris, and bulk item pickups. The decision to suspend recycling has not been made without significant consideration, research, and evaluation. The market for processing single-stream recycled goods has brought increasing costs and challenges associated with a successful and effective program. The type and condition of eligible items is increasingly stringent, not allowing the collection of glass, plastic bags, plastics that are not coded #1-7, plastic coated cartons, tissue/toilet paper, or any food container (i.e. pizza boxes). Items that are collected along the recycling routes that are not in compliance with the requirements for eligible items result in a contaminated load and must be disposed of as Municipal Solid Waste at a landfill facility. Recycling processors are sparse in our region and can change their requirements and increase their rates at any frequency without advance notice. The volatility of the recycling market and the uncertainty of the potential impacts on our customers has led the city to decide to suspend these services and continue to monitor these conditions for any viability in the future.
The solid waste contractor will be removing the 35 gallon green recycling carts as a part of this suspension of services. Following the removal of these carts, all household waste must be appropriately bagged and placed inside a city-issued trash cart. Bagging household waste is imperative to safe, clean, and effective collection of debris. Additional trash carts can be requested at an additional fee by calling Public Works at 478-988-2729.
Customers who are interested in information relative to potential options for recycling can call the Public Works Department at 478-988-2729.
The suspension of recycling services will result in a reduction in the solid waste fee, effective on the May 2024 utility service bill.
