We have several opportunities for you to actively engage and contribute to the development and vitality of our community.

Perry Youth Advisory Council (Youth, 16-18):

Opportunity for high school-aged youth to learn more about their local government and City of Perry operations. The program seeks to facilitate communication with Perry’s youth and encourage their input on City initiatives and projects.

The Inside Perry, Georgia Podcast (Youth-Adult):
When: Monthly
Cost: Free to download on popular podcast platforms

The podcast gives listeners an inside look at Perry’s local government in an informal and fun way. Discussion topics include City operations, events, and other interests of City residents and businesses. Episodes are available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts, and iHeartRadio. Listeners are given the opportunity to submit topics or questions they would like to hear about on the podcast.

Perry Preview Monthly Newsletter (Youth-Adult):
When: Emailed at the beginning of each month
Cost: Free for subscribers
Notes: Must subscribe to receive the newsletter

The Perry Preview is a monthly electronic newsletter which contains City news from the previous month and a preview of what’s happening in the City in the next month. Users must sign up for the newsletter to be delivered to their email. Occasionally, e-blasts (shorts newsletters relevant to one topic (i.e. events, citizen engagement opportunities)) are sent to the list of email subscribers.

Animal Control Adoptions (Adult 18+)
When: By Appointment
Cost: Depends
Notes: If the animal is already spayed or neutered, there is not cost to adopt. However, a rabies vaccination is required. If not spayed or neutered, the owner must pay spay/neuter surgery costs with a local veterinary clinic before the City will officially release the animal to the new owner.

The Perry Animal Control facility is open to the public to view animals when staff are present or by appointment. This allows the public to claim dogs and cats picked up by staff or view those available for adoption.

Firearms Safety Training Classes (Adult 21+)
When: Throughout the Year
Cost: $28
Notes: Participants must bring their own weapon, ammo, safety glasses, and ear protection.

This opportunity provides participants with knowledge of basic safety training including loading, unloading, and firing of handguns. In addition, the class will provide information on Georgia law regarding possession, concealment, and legal justifications for use of deadly force.

Citizens Police Academy (Adult 20+)
When: Yearly

Notes: Participants must bring their own weapon, ammo, safety glasses, and ear protection.

This 12-week program gives participants an opportunity to understand the responsibilities and challenges within the law enforcement profession. The program will include a firearms safety instruction class. Program completion is not the equivalent of completing the Mandate Training Academy for sworn law enforcement officers. The program is for civilian education only.

Police Ride-Along Program (Adult 18+)

The Perry Police Department offers a ride-along program to improve police and community relations by allowing participants to see the complex and unpredictable nature of police work. Contact the Perry Police Department at (478) 988-2800 for more information.

Senior Citizen Firearm Safety Class (Adult 60+)
When: Yearly
Cost: $28

The class will provide participants with knowledge of basic safety training including loading, unloading, and firing of handguns. In addition, the class will provide information on Georgia law regarding possession, concealment, and legal justifications for use of deadly force. Participants must bring their own weapon, ammo, safety glasses, and ear protection. Participants must be 60 years of age or older, a resident of Perry, consent to a background check, and complete a registration and liability form.

Fire Safety Poster Contest (3^rd Graders)
When: Yearly
Cost: Free
Notes: Poster contest for all 3^rd grade students enrolled in a Perry area public or private school. 3^rd grade homeschooled students in the Perry area are also eligible to participate.

During Fire Prevention Week, Perry Fire & Emergency Services hosts a fire safety poster contest for all 3^rd graders in the Perry area. Students create a poster with a yearly theme and submit them for the contest. The winner is given a pizza party with their class and Perry firefighters. They are also given the opportunity to ride in a fire truck to school.

CPR Classes (Youth-Adult)

Notes: Classes are scheduled the last weekday of the month (subject to room availability) at the Davis Farm Fire Station 2 (150 Commodore Drive)

Perry Fire & Emergency Services offers CPR certification classes the last weekday of the month (subject to classroom availability and holidays). Classes begin at 1:30 p.m. and are 2-4 hours depending on the number of students and the requested level of certification. Contact the Training Chief at (478) 988-2840 for more information.
