We remind all employees that, in addition to complying with the Georgia Hands-Free Law, employees are prohibited from using electronic devices while operating a City vehicle except through approved hands-free methods. Employees observed violating this policy may be subject to disciplinary action, including a suspension of up to three (3) days or more for repeated violations.
As representatives of the City of Perry, employees are expected to conduct themselves professionally, as our actions are observed by and reflect upon the citizens we serve.
The Georgia Hands-Free Law (HB 673) took effect on July 1, 2018 and prohibits drivers from holding or supporting a phone or other electronic device with any part of their body while operating a motor vehicle.
Drivers cannot hold a phone to talk, text, browse the internet, watch videos, or use apps while driving.
- Drivers may use a phone hands-free, such as through Bluetooth, an earpiece, speakerphone, or in-vehicle technology.
- Drivers may touch a device only once to initiate or end a call, play music, or start navigation.
- Texting, emailing, and reading or writing messages while driving are prohibited.
- Watching videos while driving is prohibited (except for GPS navigation).
- Drivers may use GPS navigation if the device is mounted and operated hands-free.
The law applies when a vehicle is stopped at a traffic light or stop sign, as well as when it is moving. Drivers should pull over and safely park if they need to manually use their phone.
