Perry Honors the Past With Creekwood Park Memorial

We're unveiling a monument celebrating the history of Creekwood Park on Saturday, July 29 at 10:00 a.m.

In 1966, a group was formed from the Black community known as the Adult Training Union (ATU) with a dream to provide a recreational facility for youth and adults in their neighborhood. They purchased 29 acres of land in the Creekwood subdivision. Over the next several years, a swimming pool, bath house, pavilion, street paving, and athletic fields were installed on the site.

In 2017, the pool closed and the first Creekwood Park Splashpad was built with additional amenities visitors enjoy today.

In honor of ATU’s accomplishments, a monument now stands next to the Creekwood Park entrance sign. The structure was made possible in partnership between Perry Councilwoman Phyllis Bynum-Grace, Gail Anderson, Nathaniel Stripling, and the Perry Area Historical Society.

Councilwoman Bynum Grace commented, “The ATU’s vision and action to better their community is inspiring. We honor their legacy by recognizing their efforts and love of community. Creekwood Park continues to be a place of family-friendly activities for both now and for future generations.”

Creekwood Park is located at 110 Ida Lasseter Circle.
