City of Perry Clarifies Property Tax Notice

To clear up any confusion about the ‘Property Tax Increase’ notice viewed in the news or read in the paper, the City of Perry wants to provide clarification. We’re committed to keeping you informed with clear, accurate information.

The City of Perry is not raising the millage rate. However, Georgia’s property tax process is complex and depends on each person’s situation—including annual property value reassessments and the new statewide floating homestead exemption (HB581). This means your bill may increase, decrease, or stay the same, depending on your individual property value.

Individuals who have the floating homestead exemption in place for 2025 will not see an increase in their City of Perry property taxes.

Why does the City have to publish a notice that it’s raising taxes when that’s not actually the case?
If property values go up because of state-mandated assessments, state law requires the City to say it is a tax increase—even though the City’s millage rate has not changed. That’s why the notice says, “Property Tax Increase,” despite the City of Perry not increasing the millage rate.

The City of Perry will host three public hearings to provide citizens with the opportunity to share their comments:

September 2, 2025 | 6:00 p.m.
Perry City Hall (808 Carroll Street)

September 15, 2025 | 5:00 p.m.

September 16, 2025 | 6:00 p.m.

Notice of Property Tax Increase

The City of Perry Council intends to adopt a millage rate, which will require an increase in property taxes by 12.86 percent.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearing on this tax increase to be held at the City Hall, 808 Carroll St, Perry, Georgia, on September 2, 2025, at 6:00 PM.

Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are at the City Hall, 808 Carroll St, Perry, Georgia on September 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM and at the City Hall, 808 Carroll St, Perry, Georgia on September 16, 2025, at 6:00 PM.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 12.697 mills, an increase of 1.447 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 11.250 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $125,000 is approximately $72.35, and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $150,000 is approximately $86.82.

Unless your property has increased due to reassessment, there will be no increase in your City tax bill.
