Perry Begins Automated School Zone Enforcement August 1

The Perry Police Department will begin automated school zone enforcement in designated areas beginning August 1 using cameras.

Visible signage is installed at Tucker Elementary, Morningside Elementary, Mossy Creek Middle, and Perry High warning drivers the school zones are enforced by cameras. The cameras will operate during school zone hours posted on the street.

Cameras at Perry Middle and Matt Arthur Elementary will be installed soon.

This enforcement program utilizes state-of-the-art multi-dimensional radar that tracks and monitors up to 350 cars simultaneously. Radar is accurate within .1 miles per hour.

Beginning August 1, the police department will provide a 30-day warning period for drivers to get used to the new enforcement tool. Those speeding in the designated enforcement areas will receive warning notices in the mail.

After the 30-day warning period, the first speeding violation is $75 and $125 for subsequent violations.

"We have high hopes that Automated Enforcement will encourage drivers to slow down and obey the law,” Interim Police Chief Alan Everidge said. “Traffic fatalities are the number one cause of death for children aged 5-14 and for young adults (aged 15-29). Very minimal reductions in speed make the roads a lot safer, especially for children.”

The Perry program will target the speeders exceeding more than ten (10+) miles per hour over the posted speed limit in school zones. A sworn officer reviews and approves each violation before a ticket is issued.
